Creative Content Ideas For Cannabis Social Media and Blogs

Your audience spends a lot of their time on social media, so you need to be there, too. The first thing to do is understand the rules and regulations and, after that, it’s all about creating great content that will interest your audience.

We recommend focusing on educating, engaging, and entertaining rather than promoting. This is our philosophy within every industry, but it’s ultra-relevant for cannabis. No social media platform allows the sale of cannabis products, which means being promotional is a surefire way to get your content shadowbanned or your page shut down. And we don’t want that!

So, where to begin with that engaging content? Let’s dive in.

Social Media Ideas

The possibilities for cannabis on social media are endless; you just have to get creative and, sometimes, think outside the box. Consider this: what would make YOU stop scrolling if you put yourself in your audience’s shoes? Start there.

Here are a handful of ideas on what to post for your cannabis brand’s social media:

Daily Content

Posting consistently puts your content on your followers’ feeds on a regular basis, and places your business at the forefront of their minds. But what type of content performs well on a daily basis?

  • “Welcome In”
      • Film a Reel walking into your dispensary and introduce your store, showing off what makes it unique. Show your products and setup, but really focus on your employees. Make it more about the experience of stopping in to say hi to keep your content from being flagged by the platform. This helps your customers get to know you and feel comfortable without even being there in person (yet).
  • A Day in the Life
      • Your customers wonder: what do budtenders actually do throughout their day? Answer their questions and let them know! Show a behind-the-scenes tour of what a typical shift looks like for a budtender and satisfy people’s curiosities.
  • Strain of the Week
      • Pick a strain you want to highlight and tell people its effects, its flavors, and how it came to be. Remember, outline the perks of the strain, rather than trying to sell. The sales will come organically; the goal of these posts is to engage your customers and pique their interests – we don’t expect them to leap up and head to your store. But the next time they’re considering a new strain to smoke, they might just think of you first. Visually, focus on a budtender talking, rather than showing too much of the product itself, to avoid being flagged by the platform.
  • This or That?
      • People love giving their opinions. Ask questions: Prerolls or bowls? Salty or sweet munchies? Watching movies or listening to music while high? We promise, people will weigh in.
  • Recipes
      • Cannabis enthusiasts interested in cooking with cannabis are always looking to try new recipes — and even those who don’t cook with cannabis may be interested in seeing what can be made with their favorite plant. Posting one recipe a week will make for great engagement.
  • Humor
    • The impact of humor in the cannabis sphere cannot be overstated! Entertaining content performs extremely well. Think about it – what makes you stop scrolling on Instagram? Chances are, funny and relatable memes always do the trick. Create hilarious posts about what it’s like to consume cannabis and your audience will be able to see themselves in your content. (Hint — this is a great way to get shares, which extends your brand awareness!)

Educational Content

There are plenty of ways to post educational content while remaining lighthearted and fun. The cannabis industry is still very new, and lots of people are learning about the plant and the lifestyle. Help them along their journey by being their teacher with this type of content:

  • Cannabis 101
      • Cover all the basics with cannabis 101, including methods of consumption, sativa vs hybrid vs indica, cannabis history, and common slang.
      • Do a deep dive into various terpenes and how they interact with each other and a person.
  • Backstory and History
      • Give your customers a taste of where you came from! Telling your brand story through social media posts gets people familiar with your roots and your mission.
  • Dosages
      • Help people understand their tolerance levels and dosages with informational posts.
  • Responsible Use
      • Newbies might be wondering how to responsibly use cannabis. Be their guide and tell them how to have a safe, responsible, AND fun experience.
  • Bust Myths
      • There is plenty of misinformation floating around the cannabis sphere. Use social media to disprove the lies.
  • THC vs CBD
    • There’s no doubt that seasoned cannabis users know this difference already, but assume that your audience is full of people with different experience levels. Some may not know the difference between these two cannabinoids or how they interact with each other, and you can tell them all about it.

Note: Meta’s platforms are extremely strict when it comes to cannabis content, but there are ways to play by their rules. We recommend using euphemisms and emojis instead of cannabis-related words. Here are some examples:

  • Vape cart = cart
  • Vape = pennifer, penjamin
  • Cannabis, weed, nugs, etc. = green, trees, gardening
  • Smoke, toke = use, shm0ke, hit

When there are no euphemisms available, censor the word with an asterisk or emoji (like c*nnabinoids, t*rpenes).

Blog Ideas

Now that we’ve covered social media, let’s dip our toes into writing blogs. Blogs legitimize your business’s presence on the internet and give you a position of authority in the industry. They tell your audience that you know what you’re talking about, and you’re a voice they can trust in the cannabis sphere. Unlike social media, you can be a little more promotional and talk explicitly about cannabis without euphemisms, since blog posts live on your website.

Here are some topic ideas:

  • Cannabis 101
      • Just like on social media, this is perfect for the cannabis newbie. A blog gives you more space to explain the ins and outs of the plant and the lifestyle. Write a series of blog posts (because it doesn’t have to be just one!) to explain cannabinoids, indicts/sativa/hybrid, dosages, terpenes, THC vs CBD, and much more.
  • Edibles
      • Use a blog to talk about all things edibles — from how the edible experience is a unique high compared to smoking or vaping, to diving deep on dosages and even recipes.
  • Product Highlights
      • A blog is the perfect place to get into the nitty-gritty details of what you sell. Choose some great products to feature and write blog posts that highlight them. This can be a great way to feature a new product or product style.
  • Strain Specificities
      • Go beyond the history and taste of the strains and write blogs about what strains are best for night, which are best for daytime, which are best for sleep, which are best for pain, and so on.
  • Destigmatization
      • Even though cannabis is more accepted than it’s ever been, it’s still surrounded by heavy stigma. A series of blog posts can help with destigmatization, such as highlighting professionals who use cannabis and sharing statistics about usage. Even if the steps seem small, the impact is large.
  • History of Cannabis
      • Go beyond the history of your dispensary and look back at the history of cannabis as a whole, which has been around much longer than society as we know it. A lot of people don’t know about cannabis’s colorful past and origins!
  • Consumption Methods
      • Help people decide what consumption method would work best for them by explaining the differences between vaping, smoking, edibles, dabs, topicals, etc. You can dive deep into all of the various consumption methods to come up with specific topics.
  • Music, Movies, and Activities
      • What’s better than doing what you love while high? Not much. Create a series of blog posts that highlight music to listen to, movies to watch, and other activities to do while high to give people some awesome ideas that they might not have thought of before. Go beyond Phish and Half Baked — while they are classics, there is a whole lot more out there to enjoy that other cannabis brands may not be talking about!
  • Buying Legally
    • Emphasize the importance of buying legally to keep up the progress that we’ve made so far with legalization. Explain how buying legally strengthens the economy and boosts the job market!
